What are you reading Wednesday: Gina LaManna and Robert Bryndza
Here’s what I’ve been reading:
Mysteries this week. I love a gripping mystery as the days grow shorter (it’s now dark at 3:25pm in Stockholm! and only mid-November) because mysteries come in a spectrum from cozy humorous right over to scary-as-hell thriller. The two I’ve read this week are poles apart. Light and dark.
Lacey Luzzi: Sprinkled by USA Today bestselling author Gina LaMamma is a cozy mystery series starring Lacey Luzzi, whose mom was a stripper and grandpa is a Mafia don. She’s obsessed with high-calorie snacks to sustain her and gets tangled up in a job for her Mafia family, many potential suitors, with lots of laughs and twists thrown in. It took me awhile to get into this read but I am blown away by how prolific and inventive Ms. LaManna is. She has 9 books in this series – all published since December 2014, and two or three other series that she is pumping out. Wow. What is her secret sauce? I loved the wry humor in this and the sidekicks Lacey has. Really good read.
I picked up Sprinkled as a free featured deal on BookBub just over a year ago. Shocking that so much time passed before I read it. I know it was free because I can grab those but I can’t buy the $0.99 or $1.99 deals on BookBub (from Sweden/France I can’t get the Countdown deals). So on BookBub I only ‘buy’ the freebies, unfortunately. What I realized is that my Kindle is peppered with free books that I am less likely to read because they were free. But also because I haven’t gotten to know the author, if I’m honest. When I get to know an author even through FB or Twitter I’m more likely to take the time to read their book. Engagement, huh?
A short time ago, I decided to read all of my freebies. Would you like to, too? Let’s start a #readyourfreebies movement because I think there are a ton of high-quality reads in our Kindles. I think we’ve all ended up accumulating a stack of TBR’s – to-be-reads. We click “Want to Read” on GoodReads but never remember to go back and buy or read those books. It feels good to start on those freebies. Great reading karma….!
I’m glad I read Sprinkled. I’ll read more of Gina LaManna’s work because a) I love how prolific she is, that’s inspiring and b) I enjoy reading something lighter and funny in between reading more chilling books.
Speaking of chilling… holy catfish. The Girl in the Ice. Wowza.
The Girl in the Ice is a USA Today, Wall Street Journal international bestseller by Robert Bryndza. It’s sold over 1,000,000 copies and been translated into 21 languages. Holy bajoley is this ever good. I could not put it down. Brilliantly researched, fantastic characters, truly gripping!!!!, and unguessable twists. Honestly, this book blew me away. I’ve long admired his publishing house, Bookouture and am really thrilled for this author to be doing so phenomenally well. With writing this good that’s no surprise.
I was also thrilled to read that he now lives in Slovakia and is trying to learn the language (gee do I know that feeling…) and communicate with his husband’s mom (gee do I know that feeling also…). Plus, he writes romantic comedies so I have a whole other genre he’s mastered to go immerse myself in. Win-win. GO READ IT NOW.
I tend to get a little carried away when I discover a new author I just love.
Okay, buy these two authors’ amaze-balls mysteries here:
And what I’m currently reading:
Next up I am reading loads of memoirs that I have in my Kindle. And continuing on the freebies that I bought through BookBub and shamefully haven’t cracked open.
What are you reading on this foggy-now-sunny-and-thankfully-above-0°C-temperatures (in Stockholm) Wednesday?
